Water, Drought, what can I do?

As we are all aware I am starting a market garden, yet this year for the first time ever the river is nearly dry.

The drought in our area has become that severe that we are looking at having to let our plants die so that we still have water and can conserve the remainder of the river water available to us and the animals.

You know it is dry when coastal rivers dry up, imagine what the people in the west are suffering from…

How am I supposed to have my beautiful organic veggies growing without water???

With the water in the river now nonexistence how do we keep our veggies growing so that we can feed and support ourselves along with passing produce on to my fellow Australians?

Well, I would like to put my usual positive spin on this one but without water, we can’t grow our veggies and fruit. I already only water every second day and this is due to composting, mulching and adding extra organic matter for water retention.

Yet, even with these key things done the plants still need water and we still need rain so that our river can run freely again.

This is the river that supplies our home and gardens with water…

So what support is available for Australians that are dealing with their businesses going under before they have a chance to excel??

I really would like to say that there is amazing support out there, and to some extent there is. But, how do they support families that rely on water from rivers, dams, and rain and have NO access to town water?

So many farmers either live partially or totally off the grid and we are one of those families. All the money, feed and food vouchers available can’t support the lack of water in the communities.

The initiatives out there to support farmers all revolves around feed. This is great if your able to have water in the troughs and tanks but not much help for those without water supplies.

I know, I have digressed a little in this blog, but this is because I am worried and a little under pressure without water as many other farmers are.

A lot would be saying well hold on your just growing veggies and fruit and you can get them from the supermarkets. Sure I could, but what about when the farmers producing the supermarket fruit and veggies is unable to supply, what is the dairies are unable to get milk…..what if, what if, what if.

Cattle, close to the quickly disappearing water supply. This has been our swimming hole, water source and the place that I have taught my children to swim. Now it is all but gone…                PRAY FOR RAIN…

We also have livestock, not the four-legged varieties but bees are live and they are stock and, oh, wait for it, NEED WATER

So now that this blog is completely incomprehensible and a little out of focus I will get off and ask one little thing of our friends, family, and countrymen…

PLEASE PRAY FOR RAIN…

YOU to vegans and veggie-heads, without rain, your not getting the food you need either…

  1. I feel for you, and this planet. Hang in there, create shade where you can, and look to nature for inspiration wherever possible.
