Progress – Bed #1 of the bottom acre

Here we are on bed #1 of the bottom acre of the property, we are busy making, filling and hopefully planting within the next week….

On this bed we have put reclaimed bridge timbers around it, this raises it, we have weeded and rotary hoed it and Gypsy is our little helper…. The temperature reached 38 degrees.

I know, you are probably wondering what the hell we are doing here…. We sieve the dirt before we start to add anything. This helps get any grassroots and seeds out of the bed helping to keep weeds down. This also reduces the amount of work post planting….

Yep, now I add layers of paper…. These have come from the local newsagency. I layer them down a minimum of 8 pages thick. By the time these have broken down any grass and weed seeds that we have missed will be DEAD….

Now, this would be SO much easier with a tractor but, we are all manual and shoveling is the way to go. We have 1 cubes meter on the back of Stuart’s ute and tomorrow, we have M.I organics delivering 5 cubes which will help us make two more of this size beds….

Well, all this is going on in the bottom paddock I will be planting, watering and harvesting off the beautiful plants that are growing in the beds above… All the work we are doing now to this bottom paddock is what has made these beds produce so well.

With Purple capsicums, chillis, pumpkins, corn, zucchinis, eggplants, chicory, garlic, beans, tomatoes, silverbeet, parsley, and other veggies I can’t remember right now growing I am LOVING the Organic Hippy life.

All the excess produce is being turned into jams, chutney, real-ish, and sauces and our beautiful chickens and the compost get the rest. I have the circle of life happening EVERY day in my own little market Garden…

    1. Thanks, Luffy, It is definitely worth all the effort we are putting in. My goal is to provide reasonably priced, organic foods to everyone and show people that organic doesn’t have to have an over-inflated price…

  1. We won’t ever get to the volume that we will have surplus to sell, but I hope that we can produce enough for ourselves once we start planting

    1. I have grown for my four little cherubs and hubby for the last ten years and really wanted to do more with this acre and a half block. The prices of organic foods in the supermarkets clinched the deal for me as they are SO expensive and as a family of six would break us trying to feed ourselves.

As per usual, I decided to get on my soap box and start producing for others, we give a lot away and enjoy this as much as planting as we know that they are eating well and the supermarkets aren’t extorting huge amounts of money from them… 🙂 ( I will jump off the soap box now …hehe )
