Drought, organic hippy, hmmm

Hmm, as you may be well aware, plants need water to survive. So do animals and people.

So what happens to a market-gardener when the water all but dries up completely??

Heres the thing, our river is just about gone. We have a couple of mud puddles to water the gardens, keep the house going and for general purposes.

We certainly don’t have water to spare and it is looking increasingly likely that our veggie gardens are the ones that will suffer.

Our river has been slowly going down over the last 6 years, yet here I was at the driest point starting a #MarketGarden and sharing my successes or failures with you all.

Well, here it is, TOTAL failure without the water that helps the beautiful organics grow…

That little water hole you see in the above picture has never been this low, in fact, I have lived here for over 10 years and NEVER had the water level drop to this level.

The little puddle is where our kids have always swum and as a nearly 6-foot tall woman used to come up to the middle of my waist.

Yet here it is dry as a bone and since taking these pictures about another four foot less puddle.

So, what am I going to do???

I have mushroom composted and mulched all the trees and given them each a three-liter milk bottle as a to the roots water reservoir. This will mean that I am able to keep them alive with minimal water and evaporation by allowing what water I can use to go to the roots instead of topsoil.

I have done similar, minus the bottles to the veggies and now only water every second day in the evening. This helps the moisture stay where it is supposed to be and allows the plants to recover from stress overnight rather than wasting the valuable water during the day.

As you can see, this is pretty massive for us and also for the cattle farmers around the area that rely on water for stock. Things are getting desperate.

For now, though, I will say a massive thank you for your support and hope you are enjoying the updates that are being sent through….

love to all…

❤️

  1. Isn’t life strange. You are on the other side of the world to me and suffering from drought, where we will be suffering from an excess of water and sun in our cold, northern little island off Scotland. Both conditions are causing us challenges with growing food, although both of us are committed to getting the best productivity out of the land and increasing biodiversity. This is where blogging is amazing. I wish you courage and will follow you with great interest! ☺️
