Homesteading! What is it?

Homesteading! what is it and how much land do you need to be an off-grid lifestyle advocate? Well to answer that I will have to ask you how long is a piece of string and how many colors are in the world. The answer to this question is as wide and varied as the colors and the length of that piece of string.

Homesteading can range from as little as  1 acre and go up to 100+ acres and the people who live a homesteading lifestyle are just as varied as the land size you can find. I know of scientists, doctors, teachers, hippies, city slickers and everyone in between. Not only does the land and people vary so does the way they believe Off Grid lifestyles are.

We are here on our 1-1/2 acre property and live quite comfortably and completely off the grid but, that doesn’t mean that we don’t have all the comfort of a normal home. We have everything that you can expect in a normal home that makes it comfortable and we also have a minimalistic life, we do however have a bathroom with everything you need and a kitchen that we are renovating but is quite functional if not all that pretty.

It really is amazing when we get visitors that are busting to come into our house just to see how we live and often wonder if we live a NORMAL life ( these people just can’t imagine life outside town limits), in fact now I have taken to saying to the women ( the men don’t give a shit) come in, come in, sorry about the mess I haven’t tidied up yet, when they enter say well this is it our home ( this is where they look around quickly and not at all discreetly) we have 3 bedrooms, a bathroom down there if you need it and here is our little kitchen, help yourself to the coffee and anything you need from the fridge. I usually get the surprised comment of “oh wow” “you have a fridge and toilet”…. haha, yes we do, and we also have lights that turn on and off 😜.

So anyway, all because you live OFF-GRID doesn’t mean that you live like a hobo, don’t bath or eat off the floor. We choose to live off the grid for many different reasons and for us we enjoy an organic lifestyle that has us grow our own produce, have chickens and also gives us the luxury of using solar energy and rainwater as our resources. The natural resources we use and the fruit and veggies we grow mean that our costs are lower than others, we don’t get the quarterly power, water bills and enjoy natural water that has no fluoridation in it which tastes amazing, we get to enjoy chemical-free produce that keeps us all healthy and tastes so much better than the cold stored produce that you buy at your local supermarket.

Homesteading in an off-grid way is an amazing adventure that you will either love or hate, thrive or dive away from. All I can suggest to anyone thinking of trying an organic lifestyle off grid and maybe taking the plunge into homeschooling is be gentle with yourself and have fun, you can live this fabulous life and enjoy the luxuries of the modern world, look at me, I am sitting here right now on the internet writing this blog for you guys to read. The internet I use is satellite based and I understand that to all the city people this would be slow but, for us this is perfect, I can upload and download the videos I put on our YouTube channel and still live life without the stress of the whole internet lifestyle taking over.

There is so much more to be said about enjoying this life but, I think from here on I will leave you to travel this path with yourself and the people you wish to go along with. Let me know how you enjoy trying this life and how your off grid, homesteading life is taking off.
